Questions roofing contractors ask about marketing
Straight answers for roofing company owners on lead cost, storm versus retail, insurance claim advertising, reviews, the benchmark data and the free 14-day trial.
What should a roofing lead cost?
More than you want and less than you fear. In most US markets a shared lead runs $60 to $120, an exclusive lead $150 to $400, and a Google Ads call $90 to $250 depending on metro and season. Those numbers frighten owners who came from a trade with $400 tickets. On a $12,000 replacement closing at one in four, a $300 lead is a 10% cost of sale before commission. The number that matters is cost per signed contract, not cost per lead.
Is storm work or retail replacement the better business to market?
They need different machines. Storm work is canvassing, speed, a claims-literate sales team and cash flow that swings with the weather. Retail is reviews, a website that ranks all year, financing and a longer follow-up sequence. Storm pays faster; retail is what you own in a year with no hail. Most stable companies run retail as the base and treat storm as upside. The seasonality guide has the calendar.
Can I advertise that I will get an insurance claim approved?
No, and the ads that try get disapproved or worse. You cannot promise approval, promise to cover or waive a deductible, or imply you negotiate on the homeowner's behalf unless you are licensed to do that in your state. Several states specifically prohibit a contractor from acting as a public adjuster. Safe language describes what you do: free inspection, documentation of storm damage, meeting the adjuster on site, and doing the work to code. See the Google Ads guide.
How many Google reviews does a roofing company need?
Enough to look busier than the two companies next to you in the map pack. Across 102,385 roofing listings the median is 13 reviews and 44.2% have fewer than ten. Only 14.1% have passed 100, which is roughly where map-pack winners in real metros sit. Because a roofer does far fewer jobs a year than a plumber, the only workable approach is asking on every single completed job. The reviews guide has the scripts.
Does door knocking after a hail storm still work?
Yes, and it is still the cheapest acquisition in the trade when it is run properly. A trained canvasser working a hit neighborhood generates inspections at $25 to $60 each, against $150 to $400 for a bought lead. What has changed is the reception. Permit rules, no-soliciting ordinances and out-of-state plates have made homeowners wary, so the door works when the person at it is local, licensed, in a marked truck and asking to look rather than to sell.
Are drone inspection videos worth the money?
A $900 drone and a Part 107 certificate pay for themselves inside a month for most companies. The value is not the footage, it is the close. A homeowner who watches a two-minute narrated flyover of her own hail bruising signs at a materially higher rate than one handed a photo folder. The same clips become your best social ads and your best review-generation asset.
How long is the roofing sales cycle and how much follow-up is normal?
Retail replacement runs 14 to 60 days from first call to signed contract, longer when a claim or financing is involved. Most companies quit after two attempts. A sequence of eight to twelve touches over 45 days, mixing text, call and one mailed item, typically recovers 10% to 20% more contracts from leads already paid for. See missed calls and follow-up.
Should I be running Google Local Services Ads?
If your state and category qualify, yes. Local Services Ads sit above the paid search results, are priced per lead rather than per click, and the Google Guaranteed badge is a real trust signal on a five-figure purchase. Roofing lead prices there commonly run $60 to $200. The catch is that you must pass the license and insurance check, keep a strong review profile, and dispute junk leads within the window or you pay for them.
Do I need a website if my Google profile is strong?
The data says yes. 22.6% of roofing companies list no website. Those with one carry a median of 21 reviews against 3 without. On a five-figure purchase the homeowner checks you out before calling, and so do the AI answer engines that now summarize local businesses. A site with your license number, real job photos and financing terms does more selling than any brochure.
Is the benchmark data trustworthy?
It is public data collected at scale, so it is accurate to within a point or two, not to the decimal. Listings are deduplicated by Google place ID and refreshed monthly. Some general contractors and restoration companies appear because they list roofing categories. Google does not publish this data itself, which is why we compute it. The full method is on the about page.
Where does the benchmark data come from?
Public Google Business Profile listings found through Google Maps searches for roofing companies in every state. We keep only public business fields such as review count, rating, website link, hours and category. No reviewer names and no personal information are stored.
What is included in the free 14-day trial?
Any one of the services we run, or several: Google Ads management, Meta ads, AI search optimization, local SEO and Google profile work, website design, social media management, review generation, missed-call text-back and follow-up, email and SMS campaigns, bookkeeping, and cold-call appointment setting. Setup, management and reporting are included. Ad spend paid to Google or Meta, if you choose to run ads, is yours.
What happens after the 14 days?
You decide. Keep the service at the monthly price quoted before the trial started, switch to a different one, or stop. Nothing renews on its own, nothing is charged during the trial, and every account, campaign and asset stays in your name.
Do I have to give a credit card?
No. There is no card on file during the trial. We need access to the accounts involved and about 20 minutes on a setup call. Fourteen days is short for a roofing sales cycle, so the trial is judged on leads and set inspections, not on signed contracts, and we say that up front.
